AAA projects 43.4 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, which is slightly less than last year (see the detailed Infographic below from AAA). That is a lot of people moving around the country at the same time. During this time many people will need to be prepared for all the challenges that may appear when traveling by roads or by air. Another important issue to consider is the safety of your home while you are away. This is a prime time for home break-ins or the unexpected emergency, that becomes an even larger issue when unattended. Read on for tips and ideas to keep your holiday safe and stress free.

Keeping Your Home Safe While You Travel– There are a lot of tricks and tips to keeping your home safe when you are traveling, but the best advice is to not bring attention to the fact that you are out of town. As hard as it might be to hold back, it is best to save your trip photos for Facebook and Twitter, until after you are home. Although, your network of friends would never invade your home, who knows about friends of friends and others lurking on the internet.  Other ideas include stopping your mail, putting away your spare key and do not leave all your holiday boxes with the recycling on the curb. These and more tips can be found here.

Emergencies When You Are Away – Of course the only time that the pipes freeze and burst is when you are enjoying Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma’s house 2 hours (or more) away. A lot of the issues that happen while you are away deal with a leak of water from appliances, this article has tips for prevention, so that you can return from your holiday to dry home.

Dealing With Travel and Weather Issues – Meteorologists are predicting a storm bearing down on the East Coast that could hit today or Wednesday—right before Thanksgiving and some of the busiest travel days of the year. With this in mind it is important to stay informed with your airlines updates. This is a great time to download critical apps that might be helpful, watching the airlines Twitter feed and others in the area you are traveling, which can help keep you up to date on what is happening locally. Make sure to pack light and if possible carry all you need in a carry on so bags don’t end up in one city while you are in the next. Carrying your bags on is also helpful if you need to stay an extra night somewhere you were not planning on. More tips and ideas to get you through the traveling madness can be found here and here.

And the last thing to remember to pack when traveling, your patience. When in doubt if you find yourself with extra time in an airport or on the road, use it to your advantage and maybe look at is a little extra down time. In the end, enjoy your holiday and make sure to get to your destination safely!
