Real Estate Agents – Be Safe!

Safety_tips_realtors_on_goThe story of a missing real estate agent in Arkansas is a similar story we have heard around the country, sadly, this agent did not have a positive outcome. Many real estate agents enter homes alone, planning to meet potential buyers, this is a great prospect in the real estate industry, but unfortunately, there have been too many stories of people abducting, attacking and abusing the real estate agents while they are alone in the house. The woman in Arkansas was targeted because she was “a woman that worked alone”. Sadly, we are in a world where we need to be on our guard, and not just women, men agents need to be on the look out for danger as well, especially when showing expensive houses. These tips are helpful and should be followed by all real estate and leasing agents, and anyone that would be alone with a client, outside of your office.

Here are 5 tips that could possibly save your life:

  1. Let at least one personal contact and your office know where you are at all times.
  2. Don’t agree to a private showing unless you’ve already met a client in your office. (This is a great tip, because it will also save you time, if the client is serious about the house they will meet you at your office, if not, they will skip it). Also, if possible avoid showings in the dark.
  3. Have clients complete an information form (name, copy of driver’s license, vehicle information) during open houses and prior to scheduling private showings
  4. Take a self-defense class. Be ready to defend yourself. Travel with pepper-spray.
  5. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, remove yourself from the situation. Don’t worry about offending a client. Your safety is paramount. (Probably the most important tip, if it doesn’t feel right, get out of there!)

More tips on how to keep your office safe can be found here. Be safe out there agents, a sale is great, but your life is more important!
